The Projectionist for April 30 April 30, 2008

Hello Meadberry,
It’s the last day of April which is always a great day. It’s the last day of the silly season and time to get down to business! Summer movies start Thursday, May 1 (tonight if the newsletter went out) at 8:00 PM with our advanced screening of Iron Man. This movie looks spectacular, even though you don’t really know much about Iron Man. I used to read lots of comics as a kid and have five issues in my remaining collection. In a nutshell, Robert Downey Jr. plays a rich guy that wants to be Superman. Since he didn’t grow up on Krypton, he turns to technology for a little help. Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow also star. I find the timing a bit peculiar — Ms. Paltrow’s big blockbuster film and the new Coldplay album release. Would her husband Chris Martin really be trying to upstage her? I don’t trust anyone who names their kid Apple.
I rented a movie the other day for the first time in years. I usually buy discount DVD’s and now I remember why. I rented the movie and didn’t get time to watch it the first night, then wanted to watch it the next night but the kids had tired me out. So, by the third day I had to return it unwatched. The movie was Charlie Wilson’s War with Tom Hanks, and I really wanted to see it. This is exactly why all movies should be seen at a theater. The presentation is far superior, the popcorn is fresh, and there are no late fees. Someone suggested Netflix, but I know I would pay the $13 a month and maybe watch five movies a year.
This weekend we’re also opening Maid of Honor with McDreamy…I mean Patrick Dempsey. I really like to refer to him as Loverboy. This movie will not be on the same level as Can’t Buy Me Love, but should be enjoyable, just the same. This is what they refer to in the business as counter-programming. They figure while all the boys go see Iron ManÉall the girls can go see Maid of Honor. Brilliant strategy if you ask me. However, word from my brother-in-law is that Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the funniest romantic comedy of the year. So make sure you check this out before we get crowded with all the new movies this month. Three weeks ’til Indiana Jones…can’t wait.
Now your moment of zen:
